Body Oil vs Lotion: Which One Your Skin Needs and How to Use Body Oil
By Kanna Botana ·

Short answer: lotion adds water and a little oil to your skin, and body oil locks moisture in. If your skin feels tight or dull a few hours after you moisturize, a body oil applied to damp skin is often the better tool. If you want something light and quick in humid weather, lotion works fine. Many people use both.
How lotion works
Lotion is an emulsion: mostly water, plus oils and an emulsifier that holds them together. The water gives quick, light hydration and the lotion absorbs fast. Because it contains water, a lotion also needs a preservative system. Lotions are thinner than creams, and the American Academy of Dermatology notes that ointments and creams tend to add more moisture to dry skin than lotions do.
How body oil works
A body oil contains no water. It is made of plant oils that soften skin and form a thin, flexible layer on the surface, which slows the water in your skin from evaporating. That is why oil works best right after a shower: it traps the water that is already there instead of trying to add more.
Body oil vs lotion at a glance
| Lotion | Body oil | |
|---|---|---|
| Main base | Water plus oils | Oils only |
| Feel | Light, absorbs fast | Silky, a few minutes to sink in |
| Main job | Adds light hydration | Softens skin and slows moisture loss |
| Best time | Any time, humid days | Right after a shower or bath, on damp skin |
| Best for | Normal skin, quick routines | Dry, tight or dull skin, cold or dry climates |
How to use body oil
- Keep the shower short and warm. The American Academy of Dermatology suggests five to ten minutes with warm, not hot, water for dry skin.
- Pat, do not rub, dry. Leave your skin slightly damp.
- Apply within a few minutes. Dermatologists recommend moisturizing while skin is still damp. Warm a few drops between your palms.
- Press it in. Smooth the oil over arms, legs and torso, then press with flat hands. Damp skin helps a small amount spread a long way.
- Give it two to three minutes before you get dressed.
Start with less than you think. You can always add a drop to elbows, knees and shins, which tend to run dry first.
Body oil or lotion first?
If you use both, go from lightest to richest. Apply the water-based lotion first, let it absorb, then press a few drops of body oil over the top to seal it in. Oil applied first can sit between your skin and the lotion and make the lotion feel slick.
When to apply body oil
- After every shower or bath. This is when it does the most good.
- Before bed. Oil has time to sink in overnight.
- On dry patches during the day. One drop rubbed between your fingers is enough for hands, cuticles or the backs of your heels.
- After shaving. A thin layer can make freshly shaved legs feel smoother. Skip any scented oil on broken or irritated skin.
What to look for in a body oil
The oils. Lighter oils feel less greasy and suit daily use. Hemp seed oil is a popular choice because it is rich in essential fatty acids. A widely cited review of hempseed nutrition reports that hemp seed oil is about 56 percent linoleic acid (omega-6) and 22 percent alpha-linolenic acid (omega-3). Read more in our guide to hemp seed oil for skin.
The scent. Scent comes from essential oils, fragrance oils or both. If your skin is reactive, look for an unscented oil or one scented only with essential oils, and check the full ingredient list.
The bottle. Oils rich in polyunsaturated fats, such as hemp seed oil, keep best in amber or opaque glass, away from heat and direct sun.
Patch test first. Try a small amount on your inner arm and wait a day before using a new oil all over, especially if you have sensitive skin.

Body oil FAQ
Can I use body oil every day?
Yes. A few drops on damp skin after a shower is an everyday habit for most people. Use less in humid weather and more when the air is dry or cold.
Can body oil replace lotion?
For many people, yes. If your skin feels comfortable and soft through the day with oil alone, you do not need lotion as well. If it still feels tight, layer a light lotion underneath.
Will body oil stain my clothes?
Fresh oil can mark fabric. Use a small amount, press it in, and wait a few minutes before you get dressed.
Is body oil good for dry skin?
Oils help soften skin and slow moisture loss, which is why dermatologists recommend moisturizing damp skin right after bathing. For persistent or painful dryness, talk to a dermatologist.
